M/V Sylvia Earle is the sister ship to Greg Mortimer, a purpose-built 130 passenger expedition. The vessel honours the highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer Sylvia Earle. As the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998–this vessel pays tribute to Sylvia’s long standing conservation efforts for marine protected areas and ocean wildlife.

The ship offers the patented X-BOW™, created by Norwegian ship designer ULSTEIN, which is an inverted bow concept that’s been built on over 100 vessels in the shipping industry, however, this is one of the first cruising vessels to utilise this technology. The X-BOW™ cuts through the swell, consequently passengers feel fewer vibrations and makes quicker transits through waves. In addition, this streamlined technology helps to reduce fuel consumption by up to 60%.
The state-of-the-art virtual anchoring technology also means that the ship can float anchorless while launching zodiacs, kayaks etc, without disturbing delicate sea floor areas. The ship also features a distinctive Glass Atrium Lounge at the bow of the ship, with panoramic views on both the port and starboard side. She will boast one of the lowest polluting marine engines in the world, due to low energy consumption, high fuel-efficiency and a streamlined design to deliver an 80% reduction in emissions.
Onboard amenities include state of the art lecture facilities, a library with wall to ceiling windows and a range of informative non-fiction titles, wildlife guidebooks, travel journals and novels as well as a selection of children’s books and board games. The mudroom, which is also a launchpad for shore excursions and activities is also the ideal place to store wet expedition gear. There is also a fully stocked medical clinic, designed for use in remote areas.
There is a heated saltwater open air swimming pool as well as two Jacuzzis, from where you can relax and observe the surrounding polar landscapes. There is a gym, sauna and wellness centre offering massages at an additional cost.
