Amazon river cruises into the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Central Amazon Conservation Complex.
The Amazon is the largest tropical wilderness on Earth, with a water catchment spanning an incredible 7 million square kilometres. Around 60% of the Amazon River Basin lies within Brazil. Its scale is difficult to comprehend, but you will begin to when it takes you more than 4 hours to fly from Rio de Janeiro to the start point of these Amazon river cruises:
Manaus – a city made rich from centuries of exploitation of Amazon forest is distant now from where it really starts to get interesting from the perspective of Nature. The best direction to head from here is northwest, along a ‘black river’ artery called the Rio Negro. As your lovely wooden cruise boat base heads into the UNESCO World Heritage Central Amazon Conservation Complex, development is left behind and Nature takes over.
We have shorter or longer river cruise options: 4 nights / 5 days or 6 nights / 7 days. Both cruises will take you through an inland archipelago of incredibly long river islands called Anavilhahanas. The longer you stay onboard, the deeper you will head into a Rio Negro’s Amazon wilderness.
This is wilderness rainforest, so what emerges from hiding for you to see can never be guaranteed. But, these wildlife cruises are directed by the rhythms of nature. Each day, you will be able to explore islands of rainforest and narrow tributaries onboard almost silent electrically powered narrow boats; or kayaks; and where the land is firm, you will have opportunities to walk in search of wildlife, birdlife and flora. Possibilities include red howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, peccary (wild pigs), sloths, caiman, arboreal porcupines; piranhas & other fish beneath or leaping out of the water; and usually between 100 – 150 different species of bird which your guides will be able to identify.
This really is a wilderness and wildlife cruise which will take you largely out of sight of another boat, with just the human company of just 15 fellow explorers and a team of expert naturalist guides.
