South from the Momela Lakes within the Arusha National Park, our private game safaris bring us to the Ngurdoto Crater. This is a 3km wide forest rimmed crater which contains a small population of highly endangered rhinos 400m below on its swampy plain below. Visits to the crater floor are prohibited for conservation reasons (mainly to protect the rhino population), but the thick forests surrounding the Crater have excellent forested walking trails. Olive Baboons, Black & White Colobus Monkeys and Blue Monkeys occur in good numbers here, along with elephants and buffalo in the rainforest. Silvery-cheeked Hornbills can also be seen spotted here.
Next to Ngurdoto Crater to the East is a small savannah area, known affectionately as Serengeti Ndogo or Little Serengeti. This is the only place in the Arusha National Park where you can see Plains Zebra. Giraffes and buffalo are also often seen here. This can form part of a great single day safari within easy reach of hotels close to Arusha and the Kilimanjaro airport.
