The largest island of the Marine National Park is Sainte Anne, which was originally discovered back in 1742 by famous explorer Lazare Picault. The island, which was discovered on Saint Anne's Day was interestingly the first of the Seychelles islands to be settled on by the early French settlers before they took up residency on Mahé. Over the years, Saint Anne has been the site of a commercial whaling station and a World War II gun battery.
Sainte Anne is a true island paradise and an ideal island getaway experience for couples and families, for honeymoons and weddings. What is most convenient about this resort is that it is just a 10 minute boat ride from Mahé, making it a brilliant pivotal point for island hopping. The island plays host to a talented Italian artist, whose paintings can be seen around Sainte Anne as well as purchased. He is also a gifted wood carver and every Tuesday he gives classes on the island for guests to try their hand. For those keen on water sports, the island offers a range of activities to choose from, including glass bottom kayaking, snorkelling, sailing and pedal boats, all of which are a complimentary service for guests. Such activities enable guests to admire the island from the water and discover the beauty of the surrounding marine park. Reef sharks are often seen swimming in the shallows of Sainte Anne, as well as a variety of other interesting marine life, including rare species of fish and colourful coral. The island of Sainte Anne is considered to one of the most important nesting sites for hawksbill and green turtles. In the breeding season (October to January) on average, around three turtles (mainly Hawksbill) per day come ashore to lay their eggs. Island staff make daily inspections of the beaches, surveying the sand for any signs of turtle tracks. The resort has also committed itself to a turtle protection programme, whereby each birth on the island is reported and turtles are regularly counted and weighed. This work is done with the help of Sainte Anne's marine park authorities and emphasises the island's dedication to the preservation of these wonderful and endangered animals. By way of informing guests of these valuable conservation efforts, letters are placed in rooms regarding the appropriate conduct that should be adopted towards turtles and their breeding patterns. Lights on the beach are turned off at night in order to avoid disturbing nesting and hatching. Such efforts have thankfully paid off, resulting already in higher numbers of turtles returning to the island each year to nest. The island is also home to 5 pairs of endemic terrapins and 5 coco de mer trees. In addition, bottlenose dolphins are often reported to be encountered around these parts. Sainte Anne offers a number of nature trails, which present opportunities to see a variety of the island's fascinating wildlife. Sainte Anne has its own giant tortoise enclosure, nestled in the trees, where three tortoises spend their time chomping on shrubbery and shading from the sun. The island has a significantly large population of coconut palms, three of which are Coco-de-Mer. Cinnamon plants grow like wildfire on the densely vegetated hillsides, as do casuarinas and various other species of plants and shrubs. Sainte Anne Resort has four gourmet restaurants to choose from, Le Mont Fleuri, L' Oceane, Le Robinson and L'Abundance. The appropriately named Le Robinson is set right on the beach underneath Le Mont Fleuri restaurant, amidst granite rocks and takamaka trees, with tables and chairs made from driftwood, giving it a truly authentic Robinson Crusoe feel. Here guests can enjoy their meals with their feet in the sand and the relaxing sounds of the waves, the menu of which consists of lobster two days a week and a stone grill for 4 days per week. All of these restaurants serve divine combinations of the finest international delicacies with the highest quality local products. Le Mont Fleuri restaurant is set on treetop level, with views across to Mahé, which are particularly stunning in the evening, making for an intimate setting for a romantic meal. Here a constantly changing set menu offers fine dining of the highest quality. L'Océane restaurant is set on the beach, serving authentic and fresh local fish and seafood. A delectable breakfast buffet is served in the L'Abondance restaurant, set right next to the pool and overlooking the sea, with a wide variety of different fruits, cereals, breads, pastries and lives cooking (omelettes and pancakes) to choose from. Evening meals are also served here, which are also in buffet form, menus of which change on a daily basis. For a pre dinner drink, the elegant poolside bar area serves a wide variety of interesting Seychelles cocktails. For six evenings per week, live music is performed in the bar. Aside from the luxurious villas and delectable cuisine, the Resort also offers a range of relaxing treatment in its Clarins Spa, performed by skilled Clarins staff. Treatments include pedicures, manicures and hairdressing and facilities include 3 massage parlours, 2 saunas and balneotherapy (treatment of disease through bathing, which may involve hot or cold water, with massages through moving water, relaxation or stimulation). The Sports and Leisure Centre and a well equipped gym offers a variety of sports and exercise classes to choose from, including Body Shaping, Volley Ball, Table Tennis, Cardio workouts, yoga and pool and chess. In addition, the resort also has two floodlit tennis courts. Photographs kindly provided by Holly Payne
